Developers juggle five or more disconnected apps every day, losing context and time each time they switch.
Developers juggle five or more disconnected apps every day, losing context and time each time they switch.
Rivian's developers, technicians, engineers, and fleet managers juggle several disconnected apps every day. Each one handles navigation, filtering, and interaction differently, so every switch means relearning the basics. The goal was to unify these tools, from factory to fleet, into one scalable, AI-powered vehicle management platform, so users carry a single mental model across every workflow.
Rivian's developers, technicians, engineers, and fleet managers juggle several disconnected apps every day. The goal was to unify these tools, from factory to fleet, into one scalable, AI-powered vehicle management platform, so users carry a single mental model across every workflow.

Users prefer well-designed density rather than minimalism.
Users prefer well-designed density rather than minimalism.
Factory and fleet teams work apart from corporate, so I couldn't interview them directly. Instead, I relied on secondhand accounts and tested with the closest proxy: office-based service technicians. I facilitated several sessions, where they compared design options and explained what worked and what didn't. Two findings surprised me. Technicians wanted the full VIN, not a shortened version. Engineers wanted vehicle images kept on cards, even though removing them would fit more vehicles on screen.

Designing for enterprise changed how I think about design. Consumer work asks, "How do I make this approachable?" Enterprise asks "people have to use this tool whether they like it or not, so how do I make their work faster?" This mindset shift taught me to find what could be consolidated and unified, without disrupting workflows people already rely on.
