This packaging collaboration combines the distinctive aesthetic of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Kodak’s branding for a limited edition of the Kodak Portra 400 film stock.

Kodak is a historical leader in film photography and still supports creators today. Portra 400, one of its most loved 35mm film stocks, is known for its fine grain, soft colors, and ability to handle a wide range of light.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a charming and visually unique film by Wes Anderson, known for its whimsical style and detailed storytelling. The movie was shot on 35mm film, adding to its vintage and textured look. It follows the adventures of a hotel concierge and his protégé in a fictional European country between the world wars.

Kodak’s packaging and the Grand Budapest Hotel both contain extreme detail. Merging both styles would come to an overwhelming and cluttered result. To keep the collaboration visually cohesive, all branding elements must be muted so that neither overshadows the other. The branding elements must be understated, allowing both brands to coexist harmoniously.

I started by simplifying the Kodak Portra 400 packaging to make room for The Grand Budapest Hotel artwork. I swapped the purple gradient for a clean lavender background and kept Kodak’s key branding on the front and back. On the sides, I added my own simplified hotel illustrations and lettering to highlight the limited-edition design, using fonts from both the film and Kodak’s usual style.
